Slimming
on Referral
is
a new and exciting solution to the problem of providing patients
with effective, lasting support for weight loss.
Slimming
on Referral
is
a partnership opportunity between local Primary and Secondary
Care teams and Slimming World, the leading UK weight management
organisation, established for 35 years.
Slimming
on Referral
was pioneered by Slimming
World and Southern Derbyshire Health Authority in 2001.
An initial study trial (1) established
an evidence base for all health professionals wishing
to develop their healthy weight management service. |

Tackling the big killers
Obesity is now regarded as one of the most
important preventable challenges
to health in the UK: the increasing risk of coronary
heart disease,
circulatory disease and diabetes with increasing body weight is
well established. A partnership such as Slimming World on Referral helps
you address the problem by enabling you to provide an effective
service to patients who need it most, and in a way that they view
positively and value.
No side effects
Slimming World on Referral does not carry the risk of negative side effects
of pharmacological treatment.
A realistic approach
Losing
just 10% of their body weight, and keeping it off, starts to bring
considerable health benefits to people who are obese. Slimming World
recognises this by awarding ‘Club 10’ membership to slimmers
who lose 10% of their starting weight and maintain or better this loss
over a 10 week period. This is just
one of the many ways Slimming World facilitates and reinforces its
members’ success.
Equality of access to the programme
Offering
free membership and attendance ensures equality of access to Slimming World on Referral. Your patients will value the
opportunity
of 12 weeks’ free access to Slimming World – a saving to them of £59, the unsubsidised cost to members.
Reducing risk
Many of our members tell us that their general health has improved
significantly since joining Slimming World and Food
Optimising. In
particular, weight loss helps:
An effective way forward
Providing
patient support for weight loss by partnership between the NHS and
commercial organisations is feasible and being adopted
by an increasing number of health practitioners. Such partnerships
are recommended by the Association for the Study of Obesity (4) and
the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Obesity (2).
